Consumer Electronics
There is tremendous interest in micro-fuel cells as
a supplement and potential replacement to rechargeable
batteries fueled by a rapidly growing and expanding
portable consumer electronics market.
Dominated by laptop computers, mobile phones and hand-held
devices that demand more power from longer lasting sources,
portable electronic devices require high-performance
batteries. For instance, although the laptop market
is quite mature and commoditized, new software and functionality
is leading consumers to update their equipment, instead
of merely replacing or upgrading parts.
These upgrades are presenting consumers with a dilemma:
functionality vs. convenience as some OEMs have had
to offset the power needed for better graphics and functionality
with reduced hard drive capacity and processing speed
due to the lack of capable battery technology. However,
even with moderate battery improvements, the key restriction
to mobility is the constant need to be near a power
outlet for recharging the battery. Thus, extending battery
life without compromising performance becomes a pressing
concern.
